JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Laboratory Scientist.
REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager
Department: Medical Laboratory
POSITION SUMMARY: The Laboratory Scientist will be part of the Laboratory operations team, involved in lab-based tasks such as sampling, testing and measuring in the field of medicine. They study samples obtained from the human body. The outcome of their research informs the medical practice and procedure and can help to tackle major diseases.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- To perform routine and specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples.
- Examining and analyzing body fluids and cells to look for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms.
- To analyze data and interpret results.
- Analyzing the chemicals reactions to determine concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
- To identify blood groups and cross match them for transfusions.
- Monitoring the effects of medication by testing how a patient reacts and is responding to treatment.
- Using microscopes, cell counters and other sophisticated laboratory equipments
- Relaying accurate results to relevant medical staff who in turn uses the information to diagnose and treat the patient.
- Keeping accurate records and writing reports.
- Assists in the production of and updating of laboratory documentation, particularly relating to policies and standard operating procedures.
- Ensuring service is provided in an accurate, efficient and cost-effective manner.
- To assist the sample receipt team with the accessioning of samples, if required
- To accurately record data, write reports and share the results.
- To support the lab’s quality management systems by ensuring that working practice is in line with ISO standards and/or other relevant accreditations.
- To observe all relevant health and safety regulations.
- To assist in the supervision of and mentoring of trainee scientists and other support staffs when required.
- To participate in annual performance and developmental appraisals and agree on personal targets and objectives in line with line manager.
Educational.
- Maintaining and updating professional knowledge and taking responsibility for continuing professional development. (CPD)
- To take responsibility for your continuing professional development (CPD)by actively reviewing and participating in different projects for continuing professional development to be agreed by line manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Aptitude for biology and chemistry.
- Patience, decisiveness and meticulousness.
- A desire to contribute to patient care and treatment.
- A responsible and mature approach to their work.
- Excellent IT skills.
- Accuracy, with good attention to detail.
- A systematic approach to tasks and the ability to follow instructions and set procedures.
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as to supervise junior workers in the laboratory.
Qualifications:
- A degree in medical laboratory sciences.
- Minimum of two years post qualification laboratory experience across most departments in laboratory sciences.
- Membership or eligibility for membership of the Association of Medical Laboratory Science (AMLS)
- Ability to work unsupervised as well as working as part of a team.
